Japan Unveils International Framework for Generative AI Regulation and Use

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced an international framework for the regulation and use of generative AI, adding to global efforts to govern this rapidly advancing technology.

Speaking at the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, Kishida acknowledged the potential of generative AI to "enrich the world," but also emphasized the need to address its potential downsides, such as the risk of disinformation.

Building on Japan's leadership of the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations last year, Kishida launched the Hiroshima AI process to develop international guiding principles and a code of conduct for AI developers.

This voluntary framework, known as the Hiroshima AI Process Friends Group, has garnered support from 49 countries and regions. These participants will work together to implement the principles and code of conduct, aiming to mitigate the risks of generative AI and "promote cooperation to ensure that people all over the world can benefit from the use of safe, secure, and trustworthy AI."

Kishida's announcement comes amidst a global race to establish regulations and oversight for AI. The European Union, the United States, China, and many other nations are actively developing frameworks to govern this transformative technology. Additionally, international bodies such as the United Nations are grappling with the complex task of supervising AI development and use.
