The Future of AI Lies in the Cloud, Not in Hardware

Cloud-Based or Hardware-Bound?

OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT creator Sam Altman recently shared his thoughts on the future of AI and the devices that will house it. In a discussion with MIT Technology Review, he questioned the need for new hardware to interact with future AI technologies.

While acknowledging the excitement surrounding AI gadgets, Altman admitted that creating consumer hardware for new technologies isn't his forte. This statement comes amidst speculation that Altman is partnering with Apple's former chief design officer, Jony Ive, to build the "iPhone of AI."

Altman leans towards a future where AI predominantly exists in the cloud, rather than being tied to physical devices. He envisions an AI application that functions like an ultra-informed colleague, intimately familiar with every facet of a user's life, yet operating independently.

The market's response to newly launched AI hardware has been mixed. The AI Pin by Humane faced criticism, while Rabbit's R1, a compact AI device, quickly sold out.

Apple is expected to introduce a cloud-based chatbot at its upcoming WWDC 2024 event, where AI is expected to be the prime focus of the new generation of iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS, TVOS, and MacOS. The company is reportedly in talks with OpenAI and Google to develop this chatbot.
